The Rotary Club of Abbotsford Sumas is better known as the Berry Breakfast Club for its annual strawberry fundraiser. In the past seven years gross sales have gone from $6,000 to over $120,000 providing the club with enough profit to make a substantial difference in the community. In the spring of 2004 the club completed a $12,000 enhancement to the playground equipment at Berry Park on Mackenzie Road. The club made a commitment to spend berry revenues on playgrounds for another two years.
As Rotary International celebrated its 100th year of existence in 2005, clubs all around the world completed Rotary Centennial projects - the Abbotsford Sumas Rotary Club dedicated $25,000 to Mahoney Park as its Centennial project. These dollars were matched by City Parks, Recreation and Culture resulting in the wonderful new structure and design of Mahoney - now better known as the Rotary ship! You will note several new sponsored benches have been added.
Dave Holmberg Sr and Shawn Thorogood of Bobcat Country generously donated their time, muscles, and the use of equipment for both the tear down and installation. Remple Concrete came through with the required concrete for the installation. Rotary members, citizens of Abbotsford, laboured along with city employees to complete the tear down and assembly of the playground.
